Strategic Planning for your Business



Planning is fundamental to the success of any business. This course covers the strategic planning process and how participants can review an existing strategy and develop a new one, if required. You will look at developing a vision and values, as well as identify key objectives and outcomes for the success of your organisation.

Note: This course does not cover project planning. It is assumed participants have the skills, or have attended a course, in Project Management. If not, it is recommended that, either before or after this course, participants attend a course on Project Management as it is very important in the planning and implementation of strategy.


Who this course is for

Anyone who wants to understand the strategic planning process and be able to develop, or participate in the development of, a strategic plan. This includes managers, supervisors, small to medium business owners and anyone who must communicate with managers and leaders involved in the creation and implementation of strategy.

  • What is a strategic plan, a business plan and an operational plan? 
  • Three "D"s of strategy: discussion, decision, development
  • What is the planning process?
  • Who are stakeholders? Why is it key to have them involved and how?
  • What is a vision vs a mission and why are they important?
  • How to create a vision for your organisation
  • What are values and what are the key ones for your organisation?
  • How do you turn the values into behaviours?
  • Doing a strategic review...where are we now, where do we want to be?
  • Understanding and analysing the external and internal environment
  • Tools for Analysis:  Complete a SWOT, PEST, Force Field analysis, Boston consulting group matrix, competitive environmental analysis, as well as other tools
  • Internal organisation...what makes a high performing organisation?
  • What should we keep, what should we start?
  • Challenging thinking; the questioning of the status quo; changing strategies
  • How to turn the big picture/vision into strategic initiatives?
  • What goes into a strategic plan?
  • Making choices and decisions...what are key priorities; what are the benefits and risks of each?
  • Developing the objectives, time frame, priorities and an action plan
  • Resource allocation
  • How to develop commitment and accountability
  • Develop a consultation and communication plan
  • Develop a risk management plan
  • Doing the review and signing off
  • Key steps in implementation
